HERB DOCTOR - As noted in the Mayo Clinic records, "Medicine and its Practitioners in Olmsted County Prior to 1900," by Nora H. Guthrey, Alexander was the only "healer" in Rochester in its early days. He was a herb doctor who used "nature's remedies . . purely vegetable." His daughter, Mary Ann Nelson, assisted him and is noted in the records as carrying on his practice, combining it with practical nursing and midwifery.
